Ever wonder why some people seem naturally happier than others? There is a happiness set point—which is the idea that about 50% of our happiness is genetically determined, like a built-in baseline.
But here’s the good news: you can influence the rest!
🔹 10% is shaped by life circumstances (job, income, relationships).
🔹 40% is within your control—through your habits, mindset, and daily choices.
You may not control your starting point, but you can influence how you rise above it.
Since 40% of your happiness is shaped by your habits, mindset, and daily actions, here are some practical ways to boost it:
- Practice Gratitude Daily
✅ Keep a gratitude journal—write 3 things you’re thankful for every day.
✅ Express appreciation to others—send a thank-you message or give a compliment.
✅ Shift perspective—focus on what’s going well, not just what’s missing.
- Strengthen Social Connections
✅ Spend quality time with family and friends—face-to-face, not just online.
✅ Join groups or communities that align with your interests.
✅ Make time for meaningful conversations—deep talks strengthen bonds.
- Prioritise Physical & Mental Well-Being
✅ Move your body—exercise boosts endorphins and reduces stress.
✅ Get enough sleep—a well-rested mind is a happier mind.
✅ Practice mindfulness or meditation—helps reduce anxiety and increases emotional balance.
- Cultivate a Positive Mindset
✅ Reframe negative thoughts—challenges are opportunities for growth.
✅ Use affirmations—speak kindly to yourself.
✅ Avoid comparison—focus on your journey, not someone else’s highlight reel.
- Do Things That Bring You Joy
✅ Engage in hobbies or creative activities (music, painting, sports, etc.).
✅ Spend time in nature—fresh air and greenery improve mood.
✅ Laugh more—watch a funny show, share jokes, or be playful.
- Give Back & Be Kind
✅ Acts of kindness—helping others boosts your own happiness.
✅ Volunteer—contributing to a cause gives life more meaning.
✅ Practice forgiveness—letting go of grudges reduces emotional weight.
- Set Goals & Find Purpose
✅ Identify what truly excites and motivates you.
✅ Set small, achievable goals and celebrate progress.
✅ Align your daily actions with your values and passions.

How do you consciously work on it?
